Face & Neck Lift
What is Face and Neck Lift?
As the time passes, loosening and sagging will occur on the neck as well as on the face. Thus, the angle between the neck and chin disappears due to sagging skin. People who gain and lose excesive weight, and those with a small lower jawline and back, the skin under the neck becomes slack at an earlier age. In overweight people, fat is also added to the abundance of skin under the chin in the area we call jowl.
Generally, obvious signs of aging occur in the face and neck area in women over the age of 55. Deep wrinkles in the eyes and forehead, ringing under the eye, prominent laughing lines, lowering of the rim, squaring of the jaw corners due to the accumulation of skin, vertical bands formed as a result of the loosening of the neck muscles and the abundance of pouch-like skin under the chin. are the headed ones. When we detect these findings, we apply face, eyelid and neck lift procedures together.
Neck Lift Surgery is a surgical procedure used in the improvement of aesthetic problems in the neck region of Ankara. The aesthetic problems of the neck region are usually caused by anatomical and structural problems, and the defective anatomy must be corrected surgically for their correction.
The skin is very thin in the neck area. There is a thin subcutaneous fat tissue layer under the neck skin. The subcutaneous fat tissue layer can exceptionally thicken under the chin. Under the skin of the neck, there is a thin, curtain-shaped muscle that we call platysma. This muscle starts at the bottom of the neck and rises to the middle of the face and is in continuity with the SMAS layer of the face. Apart from these, the deep muscle structures of the neck region, salivary glands, deep fat compartments and skeletal structure also closely affect the neck aesthetics.
Among the reasons for the deterioration of neck aesthetics;
- Loosening and sagging of the neck skin
- Relaxation and sagging of the platysma muscle in the neck
- Growth in the neck subcutaneous fat pads
- Growth in the neck muscle fat pads
- Small jaw skeleton
- Pendulous hyoid bone structure
- Enlarged and sagging salivary glands
Especially in the advanced stages of facial aging, soft tissues on both sides of the face create accumulations under the chin. When patients raise their cheeks, they can observe that the conglomeration under the chin and neck and neck skin sag are improved. Sometimes what patients describe as jowl sagging and jowl fat is actually the joining of the tissues to the midline below the chin.
Neck sagging, jowl formation, loss of jaw line and neck transition make the person look older and tired. For this reason, one of the basic building blocks of facial rejuvenation surgeries is neck lift or neck aesthetic surgeries.
What needs to be considered before the procedure?
Smoking should be stopped 3 weeks before surgery. Since the hair cannot be dyed 1 month after surgery, it can be dyed 1 week in advance. Keeping the hair long will be beneficial in concealing the dressings used after surgery.
When considering a facelift, first discuss with yourself what you want and why you want it, and then contact a plastic surgeon. Tell your doctor one by one about your wishes and expectations and discuss them with him. If you smoke, definitely quit 10 days before surgery. Communicate your sunbathing and skincare habits to your doctor. If you are using preparations that dilute the blood and hormone drugs, you should have stopped these drugs 10 days before the operation. In order for the surgery to give a more permanent result, do not forget to ask what you should do after the surgery.
Surgery Surgery is performed in hospital conditions, under the supervision of an anesthesiologist, in the operating room. It can be performed under general anesthesia, as well as local anesthesia and intravenous sedation (sleeping through a vein) method. Under normal circumstances, it takes 2.5 – 3, 5 hours. It is high likely that you will be discharged from the hospital on the same day. If additional procedures (nose, eyelid, etc.) are performed, the surgery may be prolonged. In this case, 1 night stay in the hospital. Face lift surgery is an operation that leaves a scar. However, this trace is not evident. If the fat in the under-chin area is removed, a 3-5 mm scar remains under the chin, if the eyelid and forehead lift are added, additional scars remain on the eyelids and the scalp on the forehead. However, these scars are generally not obvious and can be hidden.
What needs to be considered after the procedure?
One day after the neck lift surgery, a drain is removed from the ear to prevent the accumulation of fluids in the area. Post-operative ice application speeds up the healing process. You are discharged on the second day of the operation. Sunglasses can be brought to wear on after discharge. Sutures on the face and eyelids are removed in 1 week. Metal stitches inside the hair are removed on the 10th day. You will be allowed to take a shower only after 2 day of the operation. It’s perfectly normal to experience a feeling of numbness on the face. This will pass after few weeks. Use gentle gestures while brushing your hair while applying makeup. At least two weeks should avoid heavy exercise such as intercourse and heavy housework, and activities such as alcohol, steam baths and saunas for a few months. Keep in mind to use sunscreen creams on a regular basis after the first 6 months of the operation. Swelling and bruises disappear in 3 weeks. Generally, it is possible to return to work in the 2nd week.
Once surgery is complete, later on the healing process usually passes on with ease. A general swelling on the face may be bruising, numbness and a feeling of tension. Since facial nerves may be slightly affected by anesthesia during the surgery, there may be slight asymmetries on the face. These disappear spontaneously within 3-5 days. A head wrap is applied, leaving eyes, nose and mouth open. Rarely, a pipe called a drain can be placed to prevent the accumulation of blood inside. Since the blood supply of the facial skin is richer in male patients, it may be necessary to place a drain because bleeding and blood clot formation can be seen more frequently. Drains are removed within 1-2 days. The bandage is opened on the 1st day. General inspection and dressing change is made. The winding is put back on. Stitches are removed after 5-7 days.
What are the risks involved with face and neck lift?
Bleeding: After the neck lift operation, bleeding may be seen after or during the operation rarely. If bleeding occurs after the operation, emergency drainage treatment or blood transfusion may be required. Hypertension that is not under medical control can also cause bleeding during or after the operation. Bleeding can interfere with healing process and lead to scarring.
Infection: Infection is usually not expected after this surgery. In rare cases, if an infection develops, additional antibiotic therapy or surgery may be required.
Bad scars: Although a good wound healing is expected after surgical intervention, scars may occur due to some genetic features, infection or skin loss we encounter in smokers. Additional treatments may be required for these scars.
Nerve damage: Motor and sensory nerves may be damaged during the facelift operation. There may be weakness or loss in facial movements after the face lift operation. Nerve damage can cause temporary or permanent loss of facial movements and sensation. This type of damage can heal over time. After the surgery neck and ear area can experience temporary or permanent numbness. Painful nerve is rare.
Hair loss: Hair loss may occur in areas where the skin is pulled up during the surgery. This cannot be predicted before surgery.
Long-term effects: As a result of old age, weight gain or loss, sun exposure, and some other conditions, the percentage may follow these changes. Facelift surgery does not stop aging or provide constant tension of the face and neck. New surgeries and treatments may be required in the future to preserve the results of facelift surgery.
