Blepharoplasty is a popular cosmetic procedure 

Eyelid surgeries (blepharoplasty) is the process of tenseization of the eye areas that support these tissues. While removing the over-fat, muscle and skin tissue in the lower and upper eyelids. With this surgical application, sagging, inward or outwardly turned upper and lower eyelids, bags are corrected.

If only upper eyelid aesthetics are to be performed, the procedure can be performed under local anesthesia. The duration of upper eyelid surgery is not more than 1 hour. The amount of skin and muscle to be removed is decided by your medical healthcare professional.

Most recently, removing the skin and muscle made to cause a line to be hidden in the folding line of the lid in appropriate dimensions provides sufficient tension in the eyelid. Also, the lower eyelid skin is lifted together with the muscle with the incision that is made just below the eyelashes.

The reduction of fat cushions is very rarely required. Usually the spread of fat packets to the edge of the eye socket helps to correct the depression that occurs under the eyes. If the cheek removal and spread of fat cushions is insufficient fat injection maybe applied. 

After removing the abundance of skin and muscles, muscle tissue hangs on the outer wall of the eye pit. This provides support for fat cushions.


What should be considered before surgery?

Do not use blood thinning medications for 2 weeks before and after the surgery. Likewise, herbal teas such as green tea and vitamin E have a blood-thinning effect.

High eye pressure, hypertension, thyroid diseases, eye dryness are situations that increase the risks and complications in eyelid aesthetic surgeries. If you have one of these chronic conditions, be sure to inform your medical healthcare professional.

What should be considered after the application of blepharoplasty surgeries?

When the procedure finished, there will be tapes covering the eyelids. That doesn’t stop you from seeing. Cold, applied to the eye area in order to control the edema after the procedure. Despite these measures, swelling and bruising may occur around the eyes. These swellings and bruises increase for the first 2 days. From day 3, it gradually vanishes.

In the first hours after the procedure, leakage and slight bleeding may occur on the tapes covering the eyelids. Coughing, sneezing increase these complaints. After the procedure, there may be complaints in the form of tension, stinging, burning around the eyes.

Also, these complaints can eliminated with simple painkillers. From the 3rd day after the procedure, the edema around the eyes begins to decrease. Also, visual abilities come back to normal.

Tapes and seams around the eyes removed on the 3rd or 5th day post operation. You can put a small band the side of the eye for another 5 days. On the same day, its allowed to wash the eye area and apply moisturizer to the eyelids. When performing these procedures, you should treat lightly and not harshly.

When the bands and seams around the eyes taken, the yellowing purple area and a limited swelling are natural. These decrease day by day and you can hide by light makeup.

After the procedure, heavy sports, edema-enhancing applications such as solarium, sauna, sun bath and steam bath should be avoided for 6 weeks. In the first weeks after the procedure, it is extremely common that the eyes swollen when waking up in the morning.

During the day, this swelling gradually decreases. In the first weeks, there may be tension, stinging and watering of the eyes due to exposure to wind and sun. Sunglasses used to prevent the same.

What are the risks after surgery?

Stop using anti-inflammatory drugs should for 2 weeks before the operation due to increased risk of bleeding. Hypertension, which is not under medical control, can also cause bleeding. Bleeding under the eyelids can delay healing and cause scars.

Infrequently, bleeding problems may occur during or after eyelid surgery. If there is bleeding after the operation, emergency drainage treatment may be required.

Infection is not a common risk nor complication of this surgery. In rare cases, if the infection develops, proper antibiotic treatment applied.

Blindness after Blepharoplasty is extremely unlikely. However, bleeding into the eye during or after surgery can cause this. This problem solved with early detection and drainage.

The most feared and relatively common complication is ectropion in the lower eyelid. This probability increases in patients undergoing surgery for the second time.

The problem is usually that the eye skin taken too much. If that is the case, removal of skin from the upper eyelid may be required.

As a result of aging, sun exposure and some other conditions, there may be changes in the appearance of the eyelid. Blepharoplasty surgery does not stop aging, or continuously provide tension of the eyelid area.
