What is Face and Neck Lift?

Facelift surgery is performed to remove the signs of aging and to define the facial features. Along with the aging process, aesthetic problems such as facial sagging, wrinkles, deep lines, skin relaxation, low jawline, sagging in the neck area may occur as a result of changes in the skin, muscle and fat tissue on the face. During the facelift procedure, the facial muscles and skin are stretched and the excess is cut or removed. In addition, adipose tissue can be reshaped and the appearance of the skin can be improved.

Facelift surgery reduces sagging and wrinkles in the face and neck area and renews skin texture to remove these signs of aging. In this way, the face gains a younger, fresh and healthy appearance. Facelift surgery can be performed not only for aesthetic purposes, but also due to some health problems. For example, in people whose visual field is narrowed due to sagging and wrinkles on the face, facelift surgery can improve eye health and comfort by opening the visual field. However, facelift surgery is an operation and has some risks. Therefore, it is important to consult a specialist doctor and discuss the risks and benefits before having this procedure.

Facelift surgery can be divided into different types according to its application area, purpose and techniques. The most commonly used types of face lifts are:

Traditional Face Lift Surgery: In this technique, sagging and wrinkles on the face are surgically removed and the facial muscles and skin are tightened. It is often called a classic facelift and is used to treat serious signs of aging that require a more extensive procedure. Traditional facelift can be performed under SMAS or Deep plane facelift techniques.

Mini Face Lift Surgery: In this technique, a less invasive method is used for slight sagging and wrinkles on the face. Smaller incisions and stitches are used and the healing process is shorter.

Neck Lift Surgery(Plastysmoplasty): This technique is used only for sagging and wrinkles in the neck area. The neck muscles and skin are stretched and the excess is cut or removed.

Face Lift Surgery: This technique is used for sagging and wrinkles in the area under the eyes, cheeks and around the mouth. Usually, smaller incisions are used and the healing process is shorter.

Endoscopic Face Lift Surgery: In this technique, facial muscles and skin are stretched using endoscopic instruments. Because smaller incisions are used, the healing process is faster and leaves less visible scars.

Fat Injection: In this technique, adipose tissue taken from the person's own body is injected to eliminate the volume loss on the face. It is a more commonly used technique and is often used in conjunction with other techniques.

How is Deep Plane Facelift performed?

Deep plane facelift surgery is one of the traditional facelift surgery methods. In this method, more natural and permanent results are obtained as the sagging and wrinkles on the face are corrected from deeper tissues. Deep plane facelift lifts the skin, adipose tissue, muscles and underlying connective tissue together and moves them backwards. In this way, sagging and wrinkles in the face and neck area are removed more naturally and facial features are better defined. This method may be especially suitable for people with more serious signs of aging. However, since it is a more invasive procedure compared to other facelift methods, the healing process may be longer and the risks may be higher. For this reason, it is necessary to consult a specialist doctor before applying deep plane facelift surgery.

How is SMAS Facelift performed?

SMAS facelift surgery is a technique used in facelift. SMAS is short for "superficial musculoaponeurotic system" and is a layer between facial muscles and skin. In SMAS face lift surgery, the sagging and wrinkles on the face are removed by stretching the SMAS layer. In this way, a more natural appearance is obtained and facial features are better defined. Unlike traditional facelift surgery, SMAS facelift surgery focuses on deeper tissues. In this method, facial sagging and wrinkles are removed from deep tissues and longer-term results are obtained. SMAS facelift surgery is a suitable option, especially for middle-aged people. This method can also be applied to people with more serious signs of aging. However, like every surgical procedure, SMAS facelift surgery also carries risks and undesirable results may occur if it is not performed by a specialist doctor.

What needs to be considered before the procedure?

Smoking should be stopped 3 weeks before surgery. Since the hair cannot be dyed 1 month after surgery, it can be dyed 1 week in advance. Keeping the hair long will be beneficial in concealing the dressings used after surgery.

When considering a facelift, first discuss with yourself what you want and why you want it, and then contact a plastic surgeon. Tell your doctor one by one about your wishes and expectations and discuss them with him. If you smoke, definitely quit 10 days before surgery. Communicate your sunbathing and skincare habits to your doctor. If you are using preparations that dilute the blood and hormone drugs, you should have stopped these drugs 10 days before the operation. In order for the surgery to give a more permanent result, do not forget to ask what you should do after the surgery.

Surgery Surgery is performed in hospital conditions, under the supervision of an anesthesiologist, in the operating room. It can be performed under general anesthesia, as well as local anesthesia and intravenous sedation (sleeping through a vein) method. Under normal circumstances, it takes 2.5 – 3, 5 hours. It is high likely that you will be discharged from the hospital on the same day. If additional procedures (nose, eyelid, etc.) are performed, the surgery may be prolonged. In this case, 1 night stay in the hospital. Face lift surgery is an operation that leaves a scar. However, this trace is not evident. If the fat in the under-chin area is removed, a 3-5 mm scar remains under the chin, if the forehead and eyelid lift are added, additional scars remain on the eyelids and the scalp on the forehead. However, these scars are generally not obvious and can be hidden.

What are the risks involved with face and neck lift?

Bleeding: After the neck lift operation, bleeding may be seen after or during the operation rarely. If bleeding occurs after the operation, emergency drainage treatment or blood transfusion may be required. Hypertension that is not under medical control can also cause bleeding during or after the operation. Bleeding can interfere with healing process and lead to scarring.

Infection: Infection is usually not expected after this surgery. In rare cases, if an infection develops, additional antibiotic therapy or surgery may be required.

Bad scars: Although a good wound healing is expected after surgical intervention, scars may occur due to some genetic features, infection or skin loss we encounter in smokers. Additional treatments may be required for these scars.

Nerve damage: Motor and sensory nerves may be damaged during the facelift operation. There may be weakness or loss in facial movements after the facelift operation. Nerve damage can cause temporary or permanent loss of facial movements and sensation. This type of damage can heal over time. After the surgery neck and ear area can experience temporary or permanent numbness. Painful nerve is rare.

Hair loss: Hair loss may occur in areas where the skin is pulled up during the surgery. This cannot be predicted before surgery.

Long-term effects: As a result of old age, weight gain or loss, sun exposure, and some other conditions, the percentage may follow these changes. Facelift surgery does not stop aging or provide constant tension of the face and neck. New surgeries and treatments may be required in the future to preserve the results of facelift surgery.
