What is plastic surgery?

In today’s world, the concepts of human bodies’ integrity and aesthetics are crucial. Due to this reason, bodily aesthetics and appearance carry great importance in terms of both personal image and the quality of life of a person, having a social entity… Aesthetic interventions are generally called ‘’Plastic Surgery’’ or ‘’Reconstructive Surgery’’. The term ‘’Aesthetic Surgery’’ can be also included in this general definition.

Besides, aesthetic, cosmetic surgery deals with operations and interventions to ensure that to make the body image more attractive and natural. These can be categorized as aesthetic concerns rather than medical ones. Plastic surgery often aims to give function along with reshaping and shaping. Sometimes, it may also aim to repair or correct a wound in the body or a congenital or subsequent deformation. Plastic surgery is a group of operations that should be performed by a specialist surgeon and is a fully equipped hospital.

Why are Plastic Surgeries performed?

Surgical operations are aimed to change or reconstruct subsequent shapes or dysfunctions in a part that determines the bodily characteristics. In other words, plastic and reconstructive surgery is a branch that assists patients to reshape the tissues according to the existing disorder, to restore the anatomical and aesthetic appearance. This disorder can come with birth or can be possessed later in life.

Who performs Plastic Surgeries?

In a 2017 report in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, it was discovered that people were confused between the terms “plastic” and “cosmetic” when it comes to plastic surgeries. It was observed with this survey with 5,135 people, and 87 % of them believed that surgeons had to have special credentials and training to perform cosmetic procedures or to advertise themselves as cosmetic, aesthetic, or plastic surgeons.

Focus on aesthetic procedures have evolved vastly in recent years from the traditional facelift to fillers or laser resurfacing. Thus, everyone wants to ensure finding the right provider might have obstacles determining what kind of doctor they’re looking for the plastic surgery they are requesting. One of the major issues for many people is to have confusion finding the difference between a cosmetic surgeon and a plastic one.

To emphasize further about the difference between plastic and cosmetic surgeon here’s what to know. First, there are two types of plastic surgery:

1. Reconstructive plastic surgeryThe type of plastic surgery involves treating parts of the body affected functionally and aesthetically by trauma, developmental abnormalities, infections, congenital defects, diseases, and tumors.

2. Cosmetic plastic surgeryThis type of surgery includes reshaping or enhancing the parts of the body that are aligned with patients’ realistic expectations.

Cosmetic plastic surgery is a personal choice and it is mostly not covered with insurance due to that reason but reconstructive plastic surgery may be covered under insurance. For more accurate and detailed information, contact your insurance company. For instance, having a breast reconstruction after experiencing mastectomy is classified as a reconstructive procedure that should be performed only by a plastic surgeon. On the other hand, having a breast lift is a cosmetic procedure plastic or cosmetic surgeon could perform. Plastic and cosmetic surgery can include minimally invasive, surgical, or even nonsurgical types of procedures.

In conclusion, plastic surgeons and the cosmetic surgeon should not be confused as they do not represent the same types of surgeries.

Who cannot have Plastic Surgeries?

There are many reasons and factors involved when it comes to deciding to get a surgical operation; these can come from within or outside. It is crucial to understand the reason for deciding to get plastic surgery. Below, there are some reasons why you cannot have plastic surgery:

• If you have unrealistic expectations

One of the top reasons your surgeon may turn you down as a potential patient due to improbable expectations. There is nothing wrong with deciding on having cosmetic surgery as long as you are prepared to learn why the exact look you want may not be possible for you.

• If you have a serious health condition

There are a vast number of health and lifestyle factors that might lead any surgeon to refuse the requested plastic surgery — or at least to postpone the operation date accordingly. If a surgeon suspects that a surgical procedure can be unsafe to the patient, they may need to undergo certain pre-operative procedures; such as making lifestyle changes, signing additional paperwork before proceeding further about the procedure date. According to healthcare professionals, some of the most common factors of rejection of plastic surgery include as follows:

Smoking: Blood vessels are getting constricted due to a substance called ‘’Nicotine’’. Which can lead to a series of complications (such as visible skin deformation to the naked eye) during the post-op stage on recovery and healing of the body. The smoking habit can interfere and prolong the process of healing.

BMI: It stands for Body Mass Index and is calculated with the height and weight information of the patient. Someone with a high BMI has a higher risk for both anesthesia complications and healing issues. For example, a patient who is overweight tends to have higher blood sugar levels than normal, which can hinder recovery.

Medical Conditions: Chronic health issues that include but are not limited to diabetes and thyroid conditions can interfere with the recovery of the patient at later stages. While it may not necessarily be serious, a surgeon who will perform the procedure has to be informed by the patient with complete and accurate information. That way any possible complications can be avoided.

Medications: blood thinners and immunosuppressants are two categories of medication used that can increase the level of risk for infection and bleeding. Plastic surgeons will have to evaluate these patients on a case by case basis.

• If you are doing it for false reasons

Cosmetic surgery can do wonders for patients’ looks and self-esteem, but it is a serious subject and not without any complications. So, you have to understand the main reason to have surgery from within. Otherwise, you should not put your life at risk to try to please someone else with your decision.

You should put yourself first, deciding what you want for yourself is the most important decision on the right path. Keep in mind that your relationship will not be fixed or get better if you are having the surgery for the wrong reasons. During your consultations before surgery, you will be visiting a psychiatrist for evaluation. Due to having a misguided mindset, you will be rejected to have plastic surgery.

• If you are physically or mentally not ready

First of all, you have to be at the age of 18 to have any type of surgery in Turkey. Additionally, if your BMI is above average, you can be rejected to have the operation and can be asked to lose weight first.

You need to ask yourself why you would like to have plastic surgery and if you cannot provide a convincing reason yourself then it can mean that you are not mentally ready. Be sure of your reasons before getting plastic surgery where it is safe, hygienic, and high-quality products are used by highly experienced surgeons.

• If you need a different type of surgery/treatment instead of your preference

Despite all of the time and effort you’ve put into researching procedures, you may have false and incomplete information. Afterward, you may think that you need a certain surgery to meet your personal goals but only your plastic surgeon can make the call that will most benefit you.

During your consultations, plastic surgeons are evaluating your anatomy, your aesthetic goals, and your medical history to ensure that you are eligible for the surgery. Your psychological health is also evaluated during your consultations. Patients who have a perceived flaw may never have satisfaction with any surgical outcome and will most likely be refused from plastic surgery. For example, if a surgeon suspects that a patient might have a mental health condition, they may refer them to a therapist first.
